The Briarcliff division winning Nellies BBQ Club took on the Druid Hills pennant winning Rough Riders at Medlock Park field 7. Attendance records were broken as the crowd swelled to nearly 30 spectators, and a great day of wiffleball was had in WATL fashion.
Game 1: NBC lefty Seth took on Riders ace Archer in a pitchers' duel. It was one for the record books, as both pitchers took no hitters through the 4th inning. However, in the bottom of the 5th inning, Blaine singled and then scored from first on a Stepnen Archer hit deep to center field. That RBI-with-hustle proved to be the game winner as the Riders took game 1, 1-0
Game 2: Riders front-man Brad Brickhouse took the mound against NBC ace Ken Crocket in the second game of the best of three. Ken pitched a great game, scattering 3 hits over 6 innings with 11 Ks, but Brickhouse matched him with a 1-hitter, and, after allowing a hit to the second batter of the game, retired 17 straight. Ken took a 1-hitter into the 6th inning, but Brickhouse led off the inning with a single and then Archer and Hardy walked during some interesting defense by the NBC on potential bunts. Blaine doubled over the head of the right fielder and scored two, and then Hardy scored on a Brickhouse sac fly to win the game 3-0.
So, it is settled! The Rough Riders make a pretty big statement in their first season as a team as they take the 2012 Championship title from the hands of the NBC. Congrats to the team (and to Blaine for his second overall championship victory)! Now we wait all winter for another edition of Wiffle Atlanta.
Next up, finally, and lastly, the All-Star Festivities! Stay tuned for the results of voting and the list of events!
