[ED: The Rough Riders and Wiffle House made up their Week 7 games, delayed by their participation in the Golden Stick tournament.]
Father’s day weekend
means one thing in Atlanta, Wiffleball! The Druid Hills Division
leading Rough Riders (9-3) took on the always tough Wifflehouse (7-5) in
a two game set on Saturday. It was a National League day of wiffle in
the National League city of Atlanta, as pitching was on display and the
WH were looking to avenge the early season sweep at the hands of the
Rough Riders.
Wifflehouse 5, Rough Riders 4
Rough Rider front-man Brad Brickhouse took the mound against Wifflehouse
#2 Jeremy John on a pleasantly warm Atlanta afternoon. After striking
out the side in the first inning, Brick hit a rough patch in the second.
The balls were almost new and it was tough for everyone to get
good movement; Brick walked a batter and then with two outs committed
an error and then walked 6 straight, allowing 5 runs. Blaine Milam was called
on to get the last out in the second: with one off-speed pitch he
got perennial MVP Brian Donegan to dribble one back to the mound.
Jeremy was on, but was also hindered by the untouched wiffleballs. He
gave up a lead-off single in the first, but then settled into nice game.
In the 5th, Ethan Hardy lead off with a home run and after that the
Riders made a rally in the 6th. Riders' leadoff man Blaine lead off the
6th with another HR and the Riders put runners on base - but Blaine was
thrown out at Home Plate on a nice relay from the outfield after an
Ethan Hardy double. Brickhouse allowed 6 runs, 1 earned, on 1 hit and
10 walks. Jeremy allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and 8 walks.
Rough Riders 1, Wiffle House 2
Wifflehouse front-man Brian Donegan took the hill against Rider #2
Stephan Archer. Battling to a 0-0 push,
Jeremy broke the tie with a one-run blast off the imposing Rider
pitcher. The Riders' answer was Hardy scoring off a Brickhouse single to
even the score. But, in the 6th, Brian hit a rain maker that just barely
made it over the fence in left. Archer allowed 2 runs, on 5 hit and 1
walk. Brian D. allowed 1 run off 2 hits and 4 walks.
WH force a share of the lead and even the records between the two Druid Hills division foes at 9-5 apiece.
