Week 3 was rained out, in case the lack of update didn't clue you in. However, several teams got in those make-up games on a rather wet Saturday. This was a scheduled week off, but, you know, Mother's Day wasn't til Sunday, and that left us a whole day to play before our mothers called us in to make them dinner.
Rough Riders vs. Swamp Donkeys
The Rough Riders split a set with the Swamp Donkeys on a
rain threatened Saturday afternoon.
Riders were shorthanded early and the Donkeys came to play with most of
their roster. Home Runs and a couple of
great defensive plays highlighted the day.
Game 1: 2012 R.O.Y., Stephan Archer, took the hill for the Riders against
Donkey Ace Josh Shul. Arch was strong
and Donkey bats were quiet, only plating one through 4 innings, while Rider
bats jumped on Josh early on. In the 2nd
Mike Brickhouse went deep twice with a solo and a two run job. And the RRs
scored 1 in the 1st 3rd and 4th before blowing
up for 4 in the 5th. The
Riders take a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th, but Donkeys
rally with a Josh Shul lead off bomb, a single by Blaine and a two run blast
from Chuck pushed the deficit to 10-4. Donkey
Chad came off the bench and pitched a scoreless frame and Donkey Blaine leads
off the bottom of the 6th with a “Gattisesque” rocket over the
centerfield fence, but the Riders were too much and held off the Donks. Archer gets the win and moves to 3-0, Riders
win 10-5.
Game 2: Donkey Blaine Milam took the mound against Mike Brickhouse
in his first ever WATL start and the post game fireworks show started a little
early. Josh, Chuck and Chad all went
deep off the reserve Rider hurler in the 1st and Josh hit another one
in the 2nd. Blaine was a bit shaky
early on, allowing 5 runs in 2 innings to the Riders, but settled down to toss
a scoreless 3rd. Donkey Grant
relieved and pitched an up and down 4th and 5th, giving
up 6 runs to the powerful Riders lineup, and then closing down the surging Riders
Riders in the 6th to preserve the Donkey win. Blaine gets the W and moves to 2-0, Donkeys
win 14-11.
The Riders lose a game, but remain at the top of the standings
at 5-1, and will play a potential WATL championship preview against the TPC in
week 4. Donkeys stay at .500, 3-3, and face
the WIffleHouse in week 4.

TPC vs. Pirosotopes
In a rain-threatened early Saturday evening, TPC and the Pirosotopes split a rather weird set of games. A grand total of 8 innings were played in the two-game set: 4 in a mercy-rule shortened game 1, and 4 in a rain-shortened game 2, in which our combatants scurried along to reach the innings-minimum before calling it quits.
Game 1: Stephen Wolf started for the Pirosotopes, and, partnered with slipping fielders and sun-blindness, surrendered 20 runs to the TPC's usually potent offense. Kevin Smith gets the win, throwing 3 innings of shutout ball before surrendering the mound to Chris Smith for the fourth, and final, inning. Chris also hit for the cycle, which is pretty cool. Final: TPC 20, Pirosotopes 0 (4 innings).
Game 2: Jordan Kadrie and Daniel Foster opposed each other in what was sure to be a pitcher's duel. Despite worsening conditions, the teams decided to play until the fourth inning in order to make the game official. The Pirosotopes squeaked out a 3-1 win, but not without some really weird pitches, swings, and wet balls slapping the thighs of rain-blinded batters. James McNeil, Stephen, and Savannah Wolf all pitched in in the Pirosotopes' second inning, scoring three runs by way of the classic small ball strategy, and, despite Kevin's best intentions with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, Tucker's Finest could not eke out the win and suffer their first loss of the season. Final: Pirosotopes 3, TPC 1 (4 innings).
