Week 4 Recap

Much wiffle was played in Atlanta this weekend: the Nellies played the Isotopes, the Pirates played the Hillbillies, the Swamp Donkeys got the undefeated TPC, and the Rough Riders played two against Wifflehouse.

Duct Tape Hillbillies 1, Pirates 0
Will and Jordan duked it out for 6 solid innings, keeping up with each other in every way possible - except for a bloop line drive over Grant's head in the fourth or fifth inning that scored the only run of the game. The newbie Hillbillies, with only two players, managed to run the lead to the end, and took the first of the doubleheader against the fully-staffed Buccos. Will allowed only one hit (to Grant) - off the very first pitch, no less - and shut us down after that. Granted, he had some fun control issues, but with a 65-mph sinker and a couple other pretty nasty pitches, we would have been hard-pressed to get any solid bat on his balls.

Pirates 7, DTH 3
Grant took the mound against Pete in game 2, and seemed to have finally found his stride using non-scuffed balls. He also provided a good chunk of the offense that he would need in the game with a shoulder-level grand slam in the second that capped off a 6-run inning for the Pirates. The Hillbillies were valiant in their efforts to get themselves back in the game - Pete was throwing some good pitches after getting adjusted on the mound - but could not do it, as the Pirates picked up their second win of the year.

Side note: Game 1 took about 20-30 minutes to play. Brevity's our style! To that I would add that Will has one of the nastier changeup/off-speed pitches I've seen in my 8 years of fine Atlanta wiffleball.

Rough Riders 7, Wifflehouse 0
Brad Brickhouse put on another clinic, pitching a 1 hitter against the scrappy Wifflehouse and striking out 15. He allowed only 1 hit, dubious as it was, on his way to a league leading 4-0 record. Brian was on in the first inning but the walk bug bit him. Blaine hit an RBI double to get it going in the second, but after that, the walks began to pile up and Brian took the 3 hit loss.

Rough Riders 10, Wifflehouse 2
Riders pitcher Stephen Archer took on Wifflehouse #2 Jeremy John. Jeremy was sharp with hard risers and a very good change of pace, striking out 13, but again walks costs Wifflehouse the game as Jeremy allowed 11 free passes and 6 runs to score. Archer was just on as the rookie Rider found his form, striking out 15, only allowing 6 hits and 2 walks (4 of the hits were by Brian Donegan). Archer hit a long ball in the 2nd but it was Rough Riders front man Brad Brickhouse that broke the game open with a Grand Slam in the 3rd.

TPC vs. DonkeysGame 1 saw Chad (the Jamie Moyer prototype) vs. Nathan (the ... well I got nothing for Nathan) duke it out in the A. It's more like Decatur, but close enough. First inning started off tough for Chad with a solo shot on the third or fourth pitch of the game and the TPC added three more to go up 4-0 in the top of the first. The Donkeys came up and with the help of a couple of walks and yours truly missing one of those those mud butts with the ball, the Donkeys added three of their own in the bottom half. Both pitchers settled down after that only allowing a combined 20 runs over the next three innings, and the TPC took a sqeeker 18-7. I would like to add that Kyle came in in the bottom of the fourth and due to another bone headed play by Chris, the Donkeys scored two more.

Game 2 saw an exhuasted and slightly hung-over Daniel and Eli of the baDonkaDonks go toe-to-toe. And because of alcohol (once again), I do not remember what happened in this game. I think the final score was 16-3. Several highlights from this game were Chad legging out a triple for no reason other than to show that he can still go from home to third in under 12 seconds - albeit on a five and six year olds' field - And the pitchers during the game hitting the batters in the batters box of the other game. In all seriousness, we have fun playing those Donks and Chad is a class Ass (act).

Rumor has it that Ken Crochet regained his pitcher of the year form this weekend as the NBC rolled over the Isotopes 6-0 and 15-2.
