Week 1 Recap and Schedule Update

Opening Weekend is now in the books, as veteran and rookie teams alike busted out the hitting sticks at the new, hitter friendly home of WiffleATL, Kittredge Park.

Before we get to the recaps, the schedule on the website has been updated, so it is now identical to the one that was emailed to captains last week. Take a look at it, and if there may be difficulties making it to the game, talk to the opposing captains and get it worked out ASAP. Lots of splits this week, with the only sweep being the championship rematch between TPC and NBC.

On Sunday we also added a new stat called the Tree, so any time one of your hitters has a home run stolen by a tree branch put a T on the scoresheet. If its a pop-up that clips a leaf, it doesn't count.

Swamp Donkeys vs. RoughRidersBrad Brickhouse was unhittable in game one, as the Riders roughed up Chad to win game 1. Blaine took a beating in game 2, as the Donkeys were able to get the split, with Josh getting the W for the Donkeys.

The RoughRiders are still finding their identity, but with Brad becoming a dominant force on the mound and some strong hitting, they look like contenders if Blaine's pitching rounds into form.

Wiffle House vs. Hillbillies - Wiffle House jumped out strong in both games, taking advantage of some overmatched rookie pitching to put up a pair of first-inning 10-spots. But after jumping out to the quick lead in game 1, the House fell back into one of its biggest problems from last season, as rookie pitcher Chris Haisten allowed the Hillbillies to get back in the game. Reigning MVP Brian came in to seal the deal, but couldn't hold the lead, giving up a big grand slam to player of the game Pete to give up the lead. After Wiffle House reclaimed the lead in the top of the 6th, the Hillbillies loaded the bases and Pete fouled off a pair of 2-strike pitches before drawing the game-winning walk. Final score: 18-17

In game 2, Jeremy refused to let the Hillbillies come back again, shutting down their offense to win 17-3 in 4 innings.

The Hillbillies are still an unsettled situation, as they need to find more depth and pitching, but if Pete sticks with them, they should be solid. Wiffle House looks like they have one of the best offenses in the league, but need the pitching to step up in order to make any real noise.

TPC vs. NBC - (from Chris Smith) It was a tough day for the NBC without their law student star/ 80mph from 43' star Sam for the NBC. First game Johnny struggle in the first giving up a run and loading the bases w/ one out before working his way out of the inning w/ only the single run given up. After that TPC took control of the game winning 19-1.

Game two pitted the match up of the world series finale w/ Daniel and Ken matched up against eachother. Both were sick throughing the first two mowing down any and everybody coming to the plate, then the third struck. Chris lead off with a single in the trees to right w/ Nathan following w/ a double. Ken thought he had gotten out f the jam by striking out last years homerun king Kevin(regular season, Chris took home the prize in the homerun dirby at the allstar game infont of 25 10 year olds...geuss he can stand the pressure of that particular moment) but then came daniel with a solid double up the middle scoring the games first two runs. Kyle came up and singled to score another run before Ken worked his way out of the inning. And b/c i have been drinking tonight I do not remember how the TPC scored thier fourth run I will skip to the fifth and most awesome run. Nathan hit a line drive to the deepest part of the field and did...well...what nathan does best he didn't stop running scoring a homerun inside the park in the most epic of ways...by doing a swan dive over home plate while the guy 6" away from him was so surprised he ran that he freaked out flipped the ball at him and missed. (Blaine I hope to God you got that picture of him face planting in the dirt). Anyway the TPC took two hard fought victories and started the season 2-0.

Pirates vs. Isotopes - (from Jordan) The Pirates and Isotopes split their set. I believe the scores were 6-7 and 15-16? Both home teams walked off in their respective home games. Jordan beat James in game 1 and David beat Grant in a slug fest in game 2. Buccos newbie Brendan can slug, as can the Isotopes. And chad, so far, I think I'm beating Hanson in the average race!
