Instead of actually playing their game as scheduled this week, Wiffle House and Rough Riders sent a combined squad, christened as "Rough House" to Rome to participate in a GoldenStick tournament. The team was made up of Rough Riders Archer, Brickhouse, and Ethan, Wiffle House veterans Brian and Jeremy, and Wiffle Dixie player/part time Wiffle House sub Jason.
GoldenStick plays with no speed limit, a 45 foot mound, and 4 players in the field, pitcher, 2 infielders, and an outfielder. If a groundball makes it past the infielders it is a hit, and fielders must throw the bal back at the backstop to complete an out. There is no baserunning which tended to make things very confusing.
One team didn't show up, leaving only 3 teams at the tournament - Rough House, Savvy, and the host Muscadines.
Rough House made a good showing, as even though we came in last, we were extremely competitive in all but one game (the one I pitched obviously).
Savvy 1 - Rough House 0
Brickhouse pitched a great game in the opener, giving up no hits, and allowing just one run during a brief spell of wildness when he walked 4 straight batters. Unfortunately Scott Bragg, pitching for Savvy, was even more unhittable, as Rough House wasn't even able to get a ball in play against him.
Muscadines 8 - Rough House 2
The Muscadines, led by former WATLer Korey Pitts, feature a lefty that throws a wiffleball in the mid-80s with movement. Brian gave up a lot of runs in the first inning, but eventually settled down, and had a double for the first Rough House hit of the day
Savvy 3 - Rough House 0
Savvy is the defending region champs, and they have a ton of pitching. They shut out Wiffle House in a shortened game, as they were able to get some hits off of Jeremy the second time through the lineup
Rough House 6 - Muscadines 3
Rough House were finally able to put up some runs off of Korey during a big first inning, an Archer held the Muscadine bats in check for the first Rough House win
Muscadines 2 - Rough House 1
The Muscadines held their big lefty back for the championship game (which they went on to win), but Rough House weren't able to scratch together enough runs against Korey. After a two out rally to load the bases, down by a run, Brad just missed on a home run cut, flying out to end the game.
It was a fun tournament and a good experience, but I'm glad to get back to seeing pitchers throwing semi-reasonable speeds. We'll get back to regular programming this week, with Rough House splitting back up to play against each other. Wiffle House plays Rough Riders Saturday at 11:00. Should be a doozie.
