Week 3: More Sweeps!

As was the case in Week 1 (forgetting the wet Week 2 that was), all the series this past weekend were sweeps. The Donkeys, taken in 2 by NBC, fall back "down to Earth" and a .500 record, and the Pirates and Braves, clearly misrepresenting their Major League counterparts, are still winless.

TPC vs. Pirates
Game 1

Jordan Kadrie and Johnny Smith faced off, in a "Good Ol' Days" matchup straight from 2007. However, Johnny was almost flawless, allowing only one hit (from Marc Wolf) in the first at-bat for the Pirates. Jordan, on the other hand, gave up 11 runs (4 round-trippers) to a predictably-potent TPC offense.

Game 2
In game 2, the Pirates sent ex-Houser Brian Donegan to the hill against All-Star pitcher Daniel Foster- but much to the same result. The Buccos did score three runs this time around, though, on a bases-clearing single from Marc Wolf. TPC cranked four homers - including an absolute bomb to straight away center field, far past the fence, from the bat of Kevin Smith - en route to another victory.

Swamp Donkeys vs. NBC
Game 1
Donkey Ace Grant Yarborough took the hill against NBC fire balling lefty Seth Higdon. Seth was nasty with a hard sinking slider, allowing only 2 hits and 5 walks, while striking out 9 in the shutout. Sam made an outstanding play in the field, laying out for a short blooper and doubling off the Donkey base runner at second. And Blaine chased down a slicing ball into deep center field making the fingertip grab. Grant looked good too, hitting his spots with the shiny new wiffleballs, as a 3 run bomb from Sam was the difference in the game. Donkey bats let down the veteran starter, as Grant pitched good enough to win, only giving up 2 hits.

Game 2
NBC front man Ken Crochet faced off against Donkey leader Chad Alexander in the second game of the set. Ken wasn’t his usually unhittable self, allowing 7 base runners on 5 hits and 2 walks, but found his groove later in the game, throwing with unbelievable movement. Ken made it dance when he needed it, digging into his pocket for that extra nasty slider; he was too much for the Donkeys hitters. Stephan and Seth each went deep on the day as Chad took a beatin without the usually reliable Donk defense behind him. In perhaps his worst performance in the field ever, Blaine made two errors and allowed a run or two on a throwing gaff. After 11 runs Donkey leadership brought out the hook and tapped the right arm, calling on the veteran middle reliever Blaine Milam to finish the game. It wasn’t his sharpest outing but a two run round tripper by Seth that barely made it over the short porch in right was the only damage he allowed.

Braves vs. Rough Riders
Game 1

Game 1 was a pitching matchup between Brad Brickhouse of the Rough Riders and David Ernadi of the Braves. The walk bug caught David early in the game and homeruns to Mike and Stephen gave the Rough Riders a nice cushion for Brickhouse. Brickhouse put on a dominant pitching performance: after walking the first two batters of the game, Brickhouse struck out 14 of the next 15 hitters and did not allow a hit in the 11-0 mercy-rule shortened game one.
Braves 0, Rough Riders 11

Game 2
Game 2 had a pitching battle between Stephen Archer of the Rough Riders and Jake Slocum of the Braves. The Braves started to find their swing against Stephen as they had three hits and Joe of the Braves hit a solo homerun to knock in their first run of the day. Jake put in a solid pitching performance together, but 2 homers by Stephen and 1 by Brad put the game out of reach for the Braves. The Rough Riders completed the sweep with a 7-1 game two victory.
