So, the first week of the playoffs have come and gone, and there was only one seeded upset from the weekend. Here's how everything went down.
Druid Hills
#1 Rough Riders vs. #4 Duct Tape Hillbillies
Game 1: Riders elect to go with ROY candidate Stephan Archer in the first game, who did everything except sell tickets. Arch took the hill against Hillbilly Ace Will and both pitchers were tough. The hits were few and far between. Early in the first Archer blasted a long, majestic HR into the left field seats, but a pitchers duel ensued and the game ended 1-0.
Game 2: Brad Brickhouse took the mound against Will, injuries forced him to pitch a second game. Will was a strike out monster but the Riders were able to put up just enough of a fight to beat him. Brick hit a 1 run homer on a pitch that tied him up, helping his own cause, and ending the game 2-0.
#2 Wiffle House vs. #3 Swamp Donkeys
Game 1: Josh versus Jeremy. This one was super close and went to extra innings. Jeremy was pitching his usual stingy way and hitting his spots. Josh was nibbling at the corners with his off speed nastiness. In 8 innings the Donkeys win after small balling on walks and singles. The score was 6-3 Donkeys. I know Josh had a HR and I think the WH had a couple. Hayden for sure had a bomb.
Game 2: Chad versus Hayden. The House jumped all over Chad early and crushed some massive home runs. The Donkeys were like an annoying little brother and grabbed one run back at a time until the sixth inning. Chuck stepped up and hit a homer run to tie the game and send us to extras.....again. The WH scored 3 in the 7th and somehow the Donkeys matched that in the bottom half. Chad shut out the House in the top of the eighth. Then, Greg walks and Chuck follows with a massive two run walk off home run. Donkeys win 13-11? Chad will likely need some shoulder or elbow surgery after throwing 600 pitches. HRs by Jeremy and Hayden, maybe multiple and maybe other WH players? Chuck, of course, had two.
Briarcliff
#1 Tucker Power Company vs. #4 Isotopes
Game 1: Smoltzy candidate Daniel Foster pitched another gem, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks, fanning 13 as TPC bats were productive against the deceitfully effective pitching of PJ from the Isotopes. PJ had posted a successful outing against the Company earlier this season, splitting in one of the series. However, TPC was prepared and hungry as they took Game 1, 9-0.
Game 2 pitted defending Smoltzy award winner Johnny Smith against Dylan of the Isotpes, who was sporting a pretty wicked curveball the entire game. Johnny pitched well, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits, striking out 8 and only walked one batter, Dylan, the first batter of the game. The Isotopes were able to keep the game very close the first couple innings, however the TPC offense was relentless, scoring 15 runs as the they were able to complete the sweep and take Game 2 15-5.
#2 Nellie's BBQ Club vs. #3 Pirates
Game 1 saw grant face off against all around sensation Seth. Both pitchers were extremely sharp until the bottom of the 4th when a boneheaded play by grant saw him return to the mound with 2 outs after fielding a ground ball. Sam took advantage and scored from second base. This started a 5 run inning, none of which were earned. NBC took game 1, 5-0
Game 2 saw Jordan face off against hurler Sam. Jordan and Sam were on initially, but NBC drew blood early with a 2 run HR from Seth's bat. The Pirates took the lead when Sam ran into some speed and control issues, but he managed to pull it out in the top of the 6th with patient hitting and unusually shaky defense from the Pirates. NBC took game 2 from the Buccos, 6-4.
So, the two divisions see only one seeded upset in the Swamp Donkeys, and face the Druid Hills champs Rough Riders. The top two seeds in the Briarcliff division, TPC and NBC, face off for their turn in the 2012 Championship games. They should be good!
